What is diabetes in pregnancy?

Before this question you must know that Diabetes is a disease in which your body cannot regulate the level of sugar in your blood. Basically, the sugar you take in form of food is broken down glucose. This glucose is then transferred in the blood to be circulated in the body. Glucose is the fuel of the cells so cell takes their fuel from your blood. In your body there is an organ known as pancreas, this organ maintain the glucose level in your blood by injecting sufficient amount of Insulin so that cells can use glucose properly for their fueling. If pancreas becomes ineffective than sugar level become high which leads to serious complications.

Now what is diabetes in pregnancy or Gestational Diabetes? During pregnancy, there are numerous hormones which block the glucose regulatory system so that your baby can have enough glucose as I told that glucose is fuel for cells and your baby needs much glucose during growth. Therefore your sugar level goes high and need extra insulin. When your body doses not cope up with this problem than this stage is known as Gestational diabetes or Diabetes in pregnancy.

When you have diabetes in pregnancy it is not mean that you become diabetes patient, this starts after fourth month of pregnancy and ends when your baby born. There may be a chance that you will remain in the Type 1 diabetes after your pregnancy, this means that before pregnancy your pancreas was slowly going towards ineffectiveness.

What are the causes of diabetes in Pregnancy?

Gestational diabetes causes are not know, but if you have the following conditions than it is in high chance that you may get in the problem of diabetes in pregnancy.

  • You are obese
  • You have polycystic ovary syndrome
  • You have family history of gestational diabetes
  • You previously given birth of a over weighted baby.

What are the symptoms and complications of diabetes in pregnancy?

In Gestational diabetes the common symptoms are;

  • High sugar level in your blood
  • You feel tired
  • Often need to urinate
  • And feeling thirsty

If you having all these same time than you should consult your doctor. On the other hand ignoring Gestational diabetes during pregnancy will lead to serious complication and you have high chance to have diabetes in future life, these complications are;

  • High amount of amniotic fluid
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Premature birth

How diabetes in pregnancy diagnosed?

Gestational diabetes is usually diagnosed by glucose tolerance test. In this test you are directed not to eat anything at night and on next morning your doctor gives you glucose and than he takes your blood sample in time intervals to monitor your glucose regulatory system.

The time of this test is between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy and if you have previous history of gestational diabetes than your doctor will call you for the test on 18 week and after that between 24 to 28 weeks.
